Based on the ten Polychor Principles the enterprise defines the use of Knowledge Management to be used on all levels in the enterprise. Knowledge Management is about collecting data and using the data to generate information in the form of reports and dashboards, and then creating knowledge using the reports and management dashboards. Management reports and dashboards are used to create enterprise based wisdom. Wisdom is essential for innovation and continual learning.
Enterprise Vision and Strategies
Enterprise wisdom is used to define the Enterprise Based Vision. Short, medium and long visions are defined by the Top Team. Members of the Top Team are assigned to translate the visions into Enterprise Based Strategies necessary to achieve the visions. Enterprise Based Strategies are used to steer the operational and change environments. In the operational environment this level of management is called Strategic Management. In the change environment this level of management is called Portfolio Management.
The operational, also referred to as the Business-As-Usual (BAU), environment is where the enterprise achieves its corporate goals defined by Strategic Management in the Enterprise Based Strategies.
Tactical Management translates strategic ideas into more practical measurable targets. Tactical Management can be carried out by for instance business unit managers.
Operational Management translates tactical targets into products that need to be created. Operational management can for instance be carried out by heads of departments.
Operational Product Management
Operational Product Management is responsible for creating and quality reviewing products in the operational BAU environment. These are people on the ‘workfloor’. They report to heads of their department(s).
The purpose of the change environment is to create products and benefits that can be handed over to the operational environment so that the operational environment can meet its goals. The only purpose of the change environment is to support the operational environment. If the change environment is no longer aligned to the goals of the operational environment, the change initiative should be terminated.
Enterprise based ideas and strategies are used by the Program Steering Board to define benefits that are to be realized on Program Level. These form the basis for the baselined Program Proposal. The Program Manager uses the baselined Program Proposal to define projects.
The Project Steering Board receives project proposals from corporate or Program Management. These proposals could be in the form of ideas, stories or a worked out feasibility study. The project proposal is translated by the Project Steering Board into the Project Business Case. The Project Business Case becomes part of the baselined Project Proposal. The Project Manager uses the baselined Project Proposal to define project Releases and assignments for the product development teams.
Project Product Management
It is the main responsibility of the development teams to develop and quality review products. Members of the development teams can come from the BAU and change environment. These proposal could be in the form of ideas, stories or a worked out feasibility study. The product proposal is translated by the Product Steering Board into the Product Business Case. The Product Business Case becomes part of the baselined Product Proposal. The development teams use the baselined Product Proposals to carry out project activities and to create and quality review products.
